From the Archives: The Evolution of Ion

Over the past three years, Aaron Augustyn has shown some of the best improvement of anyone I've seen. A main reason for his success is his dedication and patience. Let's take a walk down memory lane and acknowledge some of the accomplishments he's seen so far:

1. The Evolution of the Box Jump

When Aaron first came to the Champions Club, he couldn't keep his feet together. At all. Here's some video from the early stages (Aaron starts jumping around :50)

We don't seem to have evidence of it, but shortly after this video was taken, Aaron celebrated the first of many accomplishments by jumping with his feet together and landing on an 8 or 12" box. It was a feat that we were not expecting so early, but we were proud and knew it meant more was on the way. Here's his max height box jump from this last summer - topped out at 24".

2. Strength lifts

Aaron was not allowed to use a bar until the summer of 2012 for the most part, but when he was finally ready, he blew us all away. His first barbell deadlift was 105 lbs - but we had to keep him at 1 rep because his form would start to break down. That's not a problem anymore, seeing as he posted 135 for 3 reps a few weeks ago. His deadlift in the CrossFit total was 145.

Aaron's squats have also seen some big improvements. Although he's not quite ready to do much weight on the overhead squat, I can't do it either (thanks, crappy shoulder positioning). But here's his 3 rep max front squat from a few months ago:

3. Skill improvement

Aaron's strength is incredible, but even though his first pull-up was a long time ago, he still has to use the band in workouts. The problem wasn't his strength, it was his skill. Then he randomly became a master at kipping. In the max pull-up test from Monday, Aaron strung together 4 pull-ups. After the workout, he decided he could do more than 4, and busted out 5. AFTER the 18 minutes of kettlebell swings! The kid is unstoppable.

Aaron has made the headlines for many beast modes and accomplishments. Here are just a few of those:

1) Athlete of the Spring - 2012 (after only about 6 months of training)

2) Power Clean Improvement - from a PVC pipe in the spring of 2012 to 65 pounds in winter of 2013.

3) Completed Filthy Fifty - Summer 2013 - Ask Jason how difficult that is!

Aaron went in for surgery on this past Wednesday so they could harness his superhuman powers and use them to develop the latest Awesomeness Serum (Patent pending). Ion, we wish you a quick recovery, and we can't wait to see you back in the gym posting new Beast Modes!
