Athlete of the Week: Mrs. Carey

Bubs warned me.

She said "never underestimate the degree of petty a mom can stoop to."

And I didn't believe her. Not our moms! Whoever came up with that dumb saying hasn't stepped foot inside the Champions Club walls. They have never experienced, first-hand, the love and support they will feel from this community during relocation, lockdowns, floods, or freezing temperatures. We have an environment where everyone is happy for one another; they promote, not themselves, but others they believe are worthy of awards; there is no need to hold anyone back because when one person elevates their game the entire gym benefits.

And at the core of this culture is our Moms! They, above all, show the most love and selflessness and...

Nope. Never mind.

Mrs. Carey says "Forget all that soft shit Jessica. You were so two weeks ago! It's about me now!"

And to that I say... about freaking time!

...........

Mrs. Carey has played the background vocals at the Champions Club since before Natalie Nevarez was born. The girl getting her shirt tugged was 7 years old when the Original Mom's Club came through Bishop Foley's doors; Mary Keen and Crystal were running like Golden Gazelles, Mrs. Pip was lifting small cars while laughing, Mama V was the most "on" personality in the room... and there was Mrs. Carey camouflaged in the background deadlifting with her back flat as a board and cleaning and snatching with better form than the high schoolers. Eight years later she stood aside for a new generation of moms to take the lead: Mrs. Bennis, Mrs. Tara, Mrs. Nevarez, Mrs. Van, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Goga, Mrs. Colleen.

It is an unbiased, unavoidable fact that the Champions Club is getting "younger" as the years go on; A Gym for Families kind of has a certain age range that fits the description, and that certainly plays into who I recruit; we have added 4 (at least) new moms this Summer and all of them in their late 30's or early 40's with kids young enough to fill our Farm System. At this point in time I need a new parent with kids out of college like I need a new set of rings: I'll take it if you're giving it to me, otherwise I'm good.

But all the while my attention has been on New Kids, young blood, and younger vibes, here goes Mrs. Carey in week 5 of her 14th Summer with us getting the top(!) moms time of the day for Randy and setting 10(!!) minute pr on Riley. I don't know how I keep overlooking her but it needs to stop right here. Patrice Carey is one of the fittest people in the Champions Club regardless of age or gender, and has not only set a standard for longevity in CrossFit, but she is the standard for longevity in CrossFit. Mya wants to be as fit as Mrs. Carey when she's older, but I want Mya be as fit as Mrs. Carey is right now, and there's no shame in that.

This is Mrs. Carey's time ladies. New moms, old moms, new kids, college athletes, and middle schoolers would do well to follow her lead!
