Who is Offie, you ask? Somebody who will probably never go on this site, but doesn't matter. Offie Rashed is our starting point guard at Groves and he was the best player on the court last night... and he did not even score a single point. He played lock-down defense against North Farmnington's point guard (one of The Family's kids I coach) and handled their 1-2-2 trap defense all game with only one turnover.
The state playoffs started this week, and last night was the District Semifinal. It was one of the lowest-scoring non-5th-grade-girls games I've ever been a part of, where a 5-point lead seemed to make it a 10-possession game. With 16 seconds left in regulation, game tied at 27(!), our tallest kid fouled out, and all the momentum going North Farmington's way, Offie forced a 5-second call that saved us and sent the game into the first overtime:
Both teams combined for a total of like 4 points in the extra period, and the game went to a second overtime, which became a real slugfest after we each scored lay-ups on consecutive possessions to open it up. Then we were faced with the same scenario: a missed shot on our end, some stalling and a timeout on theirs, and they North Farmington inbounded the ball with 11 seconds left, game tied, and looking to send everyone home. They took the ball out of the point guards hands, but Offie made a crucial deny in the passing lane that heloed force a mishandle, Spencer stole it, and he was off to the races to beat the buzzer...
A double overtime win in the 30's is not the pretty by any means, but we'll take it. We play again on Friday at 7 pm at Southfield High School (it's actually right past Reggie's house) if anyone wants to make a trip out there.
