"I think the four years of High School are the most useless, distructive waste of time we all go through in our lives. All of the stuff that we give so much attention and energy to don't mean shit in the grand scheme of things."
- Mr. Carey

I wish high school would have offered cooking classes, home ec, or life skills classes. Those are things that would have been more useful to learn in high school.
"destructive"
I don't know if I agree with that statement completely. But most of us were idiots in our high school years - that much is clear. I got by on skimming and Cliff Notes to get through AP English. Later on, I realized how stupid that was, because I had never read most of "the classics".
A few years back, we had our 20-yr h.s. reunion, and they asked us a bunch of questions including, "What would you do differently if you went back to HS days?" One of my classmates hit it on the head with her answer:
"I would care less about what people thought about me. For example, I would have spent the money I earned babysitting (all summer long) on something besides one lousy pair of Girbaud Jeans. :) "
I pulled really hard in high school so I loved it.
I don't agree that it was destructive. But I think that most of it isn't helpful. Same with undergrad. It's all just business to get more money. I am never going to use my undergrad degree...ever...I would much rather have just gone straight to medical school.
What! High school was my best years, it's been downhill since then!
High School was a joke. Never got into trouble but never got further in life because I took AP classes. As for people, I tried to ignore that they existed for the most part, outside of my friends obviously. The only thing high school taught me was how to deal with the insane amount of bull-shit you encounter in life.
My. Carey, as much as I love you, I'm going to have to disagree, I think that I learned a few valuable lessons (obviously not quality education) but about people, and friendships (SPORTS) and ultimately I learned that 4 years dont define you, but they impact you.
My first gut feeling was to disagree, but I thought about it and he might be on to something...
Destructive may be too strong, how about, "HS is the most overrated four years of your life (by far!)..."
Even undergrad to a certain degree. They still make you take all those BS general education requirements. Why not fill that with practical experiences in your field of work, or something else more useful!
Al Bundy once scored 4 touchdowns in a high school football game! Don't get any better than that. Throw on some Bruce and everyone sing Glory days.
Plus in high school you get to read the Great Gatsby!
I feel Brian's comment too. Glory days, for sure. But no Great Gatsby - plus I would have Cliff Noted it anyway. I did read it as an adult though.
