Who's Got Your Attention: Mrs. Hana

I've trashed a few nutrition posts in recent days (one on tortillas, one on making sure you're eating enough, one on smoothies) because I think they'd be distracting the parents from the underlying issues that keep them circling back to the same damn place every year. One of these underlying issues is information overload (also a major limiting factor in the basketball world I live in).

Mrs. Hana is actually a perfect example to use this first installment; imagine she is teaching her entire class to do addition a certain way, but when the kids go home their parents have them do it a different way, and their grandparents show them a different way, and their older siblings show them an app that does the math for them... not only does that undermine Mrs. Hana's progression, but it also undermines the parents, grandparents, and siblings. Great things happen when you go all-in.

So last night Mrs. Hana emailed me a list of who's got her attention when it comes to nutrition and health:

  1. Chris
Purpose - coach, nutrition support and guidance, and more!
    Frequency of Use - daily
  2. Fitbit [ed - it's pronounced FAP!]
Purpose - track steps and exercise
    Frequency of Use - daily
  3. Lose It
Purpose - an app used to track food intake (calories, other nutrition info)
    Frequency of Use - daily
  4. Omada
Purpose- digital scale used to connect with health coach, record weight and body composition
    Frequency of Use - daily
  5. My Fitness Pal
Purpose - food tracker, nutrition articles
Frequency of Use - no longer in use
  6. Thrive Hot Yoga
Purpose - attend yoga, nutrition emails
    Frequency of Use - weekly
  7. Weight Guru
    Purpose - tracking weight
    Frequency of Use - daily
  8. Facebook sites (Tia's community, Shawn T, etc.)
    Purpose - nutrition information
    Frequency of Use - sporadically
  9. Gym pals [ed - we're family, not pals!]
Purpose - health and wellness discussions
    Frequency of Use - daily
  10. Coworkers
Purpose - health and wellness discussions
    Frequency of Use - daily
  11. Family members
Purpose - health and wellness discussions
Frequency of Use - weekly or bi-weekly
  12. MESSA Insurance
Purpose - Nutrition, health, wellness articles
    Frequency of Use - Quarterly

*ed - I think it would be helpful to specify which family members, which coworkers, which gym "pals", which facebook sites and list them separately

Good Lord Mrs. Hana! I see where the death face comes from now...

One of the things Coach White told me is, "sometimes a coach needs a translator." The job of a translator is to listen or read the original message and recommunicate that in a way the student can understand; it's about the student. When a translator adds their opinion into the mix, it becomes about the translator.

I am not a translator on the list above: I give my opinion on what progressions you need. But FAPs, Lose It, Omada, My Fitness Pal, Thrive Hot Yoga, Weight Guru, Facebook, and MESSA are also not translators. They have their own opinions on what progressions Mrs. Hana needs. Any time spent listening to me undermines them just as much as it does the other way around. Same can probably be said for some (not all, I'm sure) of family members and coworkers. Mrs. Tara is a translator, though; she speaks Chris very well when it comes to nutrition. So does Bubs, Mr. Curtis, Mr. Malak, Mr. Ron... the list can go on. FAPs, Lose It, and MESSA probably have their own translators as well.

The solution here is not to have Chris as the only one listed; my progressions might be wrong. The solution is to only have one thing have your attention on any given topic. The closer you get that solution, the more clarity you will have and the quicker you'll find results.
