Placing Obstacles to Help Break Habits

One of the things that smokers will do while they are trying to gradually eliminate cigarettes from their daily routine is change their smoking spot. Instead of going out to the back porch to smoke, they'll walk around the block to the telephone poll by the park, have their cigarette, then walk back home. Over time taking the convenience out of the activity helps discourage them from doing it.

We can use the same general technique for any habit we are trying to break. Here's a few ideas:

  • Turn off your cell phone every time you aren't using it.
  • Put the batteries for the tv remote somewhere hard to get.
  • Eat a bowl of veggies before you eat something crappy.
  • Drink a glass of water before you drink something crappy.
  • Do 15 burpees as fast as you can before texting me you won't make it in to the workout.
  • Spend 1 minute of the floor for every 1 minute you spend in a chair.

Big companies are becoming really good at making things convenient. Take away the convenience and we are usually left with only the right things.

Pay a compliment to Mrs. Carey before taking a piece of candy. Not easy to do, is it?
