Champions Club Summer 2022 Official Invite

I've been trying to think of a good intro to write here for longer than a post on a semi-private website deserves. But there's a Pusha T lyric stuck in my head that's getting in the way of all that, and it actually sums up everything that needs to be said:

"If you know, you know"

Rookies? There have been three Summers (2014, 2017, 2020) where I didn't think we'd have a Rookies session; both of them turned one out by Summer's end. This year... I'm not sure where we'd fit it! 6:30? Move some people around at 9 am and make that one for Rookies again? We'll figure it out like we always do.

My personal wishlist. I'm not gonna turn down good fits for the regular groups if you have any in mind. But the level I'm really giving a lot of recruiting attention to is the Babies and Double-A. We just need numbers, simple as that. Ages 3ish-12ish. Our only two requirements are 1) parents can't be helicopters and 2) kids can follow instructions 10% of the time. By Summer's end I'd love to have 40 kids in the Champions Club Farm System, and I could really use some help there. Simplest way would be for either teams of neighborhoods to come in.

Babysitting the certified babysitter. I want your kids to live at the gym this Summer - especially the Double-A kids, as next year will probably be their call up to the majors. Josh, Mallory, and Zeena have always done a good job of being around, jumping in-and-out of workouts. I'd like to see more of that from Natalie, Michael, Dita, Carmen, the Busch Babies, and the rest of the crew. Bring them up early, pick them up late, come in with the siblings, let the villiage do its thing!

Theme Workouts. Disney, 80's, Shark Week, and Harry Potter are the usual ones. I was thinking about a Football Theme Workout where each team starts on separate sides of the gym and has to, you know, football their way to the other side (what could go wrong?) And I was also thinking of bringing back the Mario Workout in honor of the new Mario Soccer game for the Switch. But I'm open to suggestions.

Draft. You bet! I was considering a lot of people this time around, trying to see who could challenge Mr. Van's record from last year. We're going with Catholic School captains for this Summer: Zander, Anto, Bubs, Aaron. May the Lord be with you.

And also with you.

League Night for the Parents. I'd love to do a weeknight 2-on-2 basketball league for the dads, or a Sunday dishwashing volleyball league for the moms (we have a net). If you guys want to organize and set it up, I'm all for it. We aren't competing in CrossFit as a sport, so I think it's good to have something to use your fitness on other than more CrossFit workouts.

Predictions. Now allow me seven attempts to look stupid in September.

  1. One of the weekend workouts will have 50+ people
  2. Team Bubs wins the attendance draft by a landslide
  3. The basketball hoop finally breaks
  4. We have 40 Babies + Double-A, but attendance isn't consistently over 10 at either session
  5. The dads have a resurgance and challenge the moms for supremacy
  6. The best website post of the Summer will be published the night before it starts
  7. Our AOTS will be a baseball kid

Final words. There is always part of my brain that challenges how much emphasis I put on the Summer. How different is it really than the rest of the year? In some ways it's not: The workouts are about the same as the workouts during the other 9 months; I'm still nagging people about their form and what they ate for breakfast; the equipment is still hand-me-down.

To me, it comes down to the fact that subtracting is often more valuable than adding because of all the possibilities it opens up. I think that's why every kid subconsciously loses their mind when the final bell rings on the last day of school, and I also think that's what makes the Summer at the Champions Club different.

You guys all know what you really need: prioritizing your health and fitness with a group of people that give you energy rather than take it. Yet for 9 months you've been at the mercy of your schedule and "urgent" things and your mind and body have spent a lot of time away from what you really need. But now that is about to change.

There has been a lot of change in the direction at the gym over the past 4 years, but this is the first time I can really say that we're settled. I mean, just look at the roster: it's literally the same people from last Summer! And the constant I've been hearing from everyone is they're ready for the settle down. They're ready to subtract all that outside noise from their agenda and come back to what's important. They're ready to surround themselves with people who are just like them... or not an effing thing like them at all but somehow it's still cool.

If Jaylee did CrossFit alone, it would work. If Jaylee did CrossFit with Sarah Curtis, it would work better. If Jaylee did CrossFit with Sarah Curtis, and Lulu, and Conamora, and Sam Curtis, and Lily, and Ashlyn, and Priti, and... and... and... she'd get a vibe that couldn't be replicated anywhere else.

The Champions Club Summer is a 3 month long family reunion: That's why it's different. Buckle up kids, we're about to have an all-timer!
