Athlete of the Week: Owen

In 2011, a decision was made to ban Purple Toad from our Mario Baseball league; the years of playing the quiet background finally caught up with him and erupted over into a heated altercation with an umpire that tarnished the good reputation the league had going for itself. Jay managed to capture a picture live as it happened:
A few seasons passed, and in the midst of the Funky Kong steroid controversy, the commissioner decided to reinstate Purple Toad for the Madison Ave Themed season, and the young fella went on an absolute tear, getting his act together long enough to finish towards the top of the league in Doubles, Nice Plays!, and RBIs.
That Summer, a quiet misshapen young lad walked into the Champions Club as a recommendation from the very comissioner who had banned Purple Toad a few months prior. Owen Munk was in the Summer Rookies picture, worked hard, liked basketball, and placed himself firmly as the origin on the Graph of Ability and personality; neither here, nor there, just present and accounted for.
As the years went on, Owen grew more and more confident with his fitness and his personality and began to test the Champions Club's top performers: Cecilia, Aaron, Javier and Alejandro, Dillon and Jessica, and even his younger, more likable brother, Zander, have all perished in workouts at the hands of Ol' Hitches in Short Britches. In a preemptive act of power tripping, Owen was voted off the Champions Club Board of directors by, well, whoever the board of directors were at that given time.
Since then, Owen has completely redesigned his life habits, cutting down in his partying, cleaning up his diet, eliminated most of his stress, and, most importantly, stopped leaving his hoodies at the gym on 90 degree days.
For real though, Owen came into this Summer in the best shape he's been in since leaving for college and it's shown in his workouts. This week'd highlight was beating Saporito head-to-head in Kelly, but his overall consistency - even since coming back from vacation - has been what's the most impressive to me. To go from a serious basketball player who keeps to himself to a normal college kid in a fraternity is a jump I never made in my life, but I can imagine it was a shock to him. So, I'm sure, was retreating back a bit to someone who can have a social life and be serious about their health and fitness at the same time. Owen seems to be on the right track for finding that balance. Hopefully the board recognizes his achievements and awards him accordingly!
