Mooney Minute - by Lauren Higgins

Yesterday, I asked Champions Club veteran Lauren Higgins to do a recap on her basketball season - her first in a Cardinal Mooney uniform and her last as a high school sesion. Here's her reply:

After a long season of basketball, the end has finally come. We started off strong and finished strong as well and I couldn't be more proud of how far our team has come. In the pre-season, we played a bounty of non-league games and came out victorious in all except one to Richmond High School. We had a target on our back for the Catholic League, as we were the top team and predicted to go all the way and win the Catholic League Final. We did come out the top team in our league, going undefeated against Bishop Foley, Everest, Shrine, Cranbook Kingswood, and Our Lady of the Lakes. Catholic League playoffs began and we advanced to the Catholic League semifinal, where we experienced a heartbreaking loss to Everest at the buzzer. This would be the first and last time we let Everest defeat us (spoiler alert). We played a few more non-league games prior to state playoffs to prepare ourselves for some tough competition, and we came out victorious in some, and came up short in others, to much larger Class A teams such as Regina, Harper Woods, and Lanse Creuse North. State playoffs began and we breezed through our district, beating Parkway Christian and Merritt Academy by at least 30 points each. We then moved on to our regional and found ourselves with a little bit stiffer competition, facing St. Thomas Moore and Kingston. We ended up beating both teams by 20 points and found ourselves facing Everest again in the quarterfinal game. This would be our fourth matchup against them and we knew what we had to do to take ourselves to the state semifinal. We played our game and controlled the pace, leading us to a 7 point victory and also taking us to the Breslin Center where the final four compete for the state title. The state semifinal game came, and we held the lead against Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart for a large chunk of the game. We had given it our all and were fundamentally the better team, but we ended up with too many mistakes resulting in our 12 point loss to Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart who later advanced to win the Class D State Championship title.

Notice, not a single mention of her personal achievements - including All-League honors (despite only playing half of the season). True team player. Glad we'll see her back at the Champions Club this week. For further reference, check out these links:
