Guest Post: Schott Takes GTA

by, Schott

...........

As many of you are aware, I was victim of a hit and run accident in Detroit the week before Thanksgiving. My car is still not fixed yet and I have had to scrounge around Detroit, breaking into and hot-wiring all sorts of vehicles, to make it to the gym. Chris chronicled my degenerative escapades very accurately, but I figured it could benefit from another addition of “Schott takes”. So, without further ado, here are rankings of just some of the vehicles I’ve GTA’d over the past couple month.

Ford C-Max Energi

Nothing says “hey you, stuff me in a locker and take my lunch money” quite like driving a C-Max does. The Ford C-Max is a roomy, surprisingly powerful, and comfortable vehicle. It comes fully loaded with leather, heated seats, power everything, nav, and upgraded sound system for a remarkably reasonable price. The Energi trim means it’s a plug-in hybrid, which is great for the environment. It’s got a lot going for it, but there’s a reason Ford stopped making this vehicle. Folks just thought it was ugly.

Jeep Gladiator

On the flip side, nothing says “I peaked in high school and am still trying to have people think I’m cool” like the Jeep Gladiator. I can’t deny the Gladiator looks awesome. Makes me want to re-enact the movie and fight someone in a colosseum. The Wrangler look and capability is classic, and the Gladiator takes the best elements and puts them on a truck. Unfortunately, that’s the only good thing I can say about it. It is expensive, uncomfortable, drives horribly, doesn’t have the best towing or payload capacity, and gets atrocious gas milage. If you want a real truck, get anything else.

Ford Focus ST

I used to have a Focus ST and I miss it a lot. This hot hatch has awesome power and great driving dynamics, while being a practically sized vehicle for commuters or a small family. You can drive timidly, like Malak avoiding a death to legs workout, or be a total hooligan and drift wildly around Detroit during a snowstorm like me. The choice is yours. Either way, the ST is a great car for a wide range of people: everyday drivers to car enthusiasts, and manual driving newcomers to experienced drivers.

Chevrolet Equinox

Hands down, Mrs. Tara’s Chevy Equinox is my favorite vehicle of the cars I’ve borrowed. She was kind enough to lend it to me while their family was up north after Christmas. The Equinox is a great all-around SUV. It looks good, has ample power, good fuel economy, plenty of space for passengers or cargo, is loaded with tech and safety features, and has solid driving dynamics. I don’t have a single bad thing to say about the vehicle or its owner. Even though I used to work at Ford, I feel just fine recommending folks get this Chevy.
