Guest Post: For the Love of Soccer and Other Things

by, Mya

(She didn't include a title so I made this one up)

...........

After a long “step into my office” talk with Chris, which I really didn’t know I needed until the conversation was over. So I decided to write a post. Also, fun fact: I’m in psych right now writing this instead of paying attention because your senior year of high school is quite literally more boring than L-sit practice for 20 minutes.

Anyway, the point……. So just recently a few of us (I mean the girls soccer players in the gym) from this soccer and running gym have committed to play college soccer, myself included. I have gotten a lot of questions from so many people, but it's the usual questions like; “Why did you choose that school?” “Did they give you a good amount of scholarship money?” “Do you like the coach?” “What’s your favorite thing about campus?”, but yesterday Chris asked me “Why do you play soccer” “What do you love about playing?”. Not one person has asked me these questions when I really should’ve been asking myself these questions. My response to Chris’s questions was “Honestly I don’t really know, I’ve just been playing it my whole life and I don’t really know myself as not being a soccer player”. We talked more about it and I think I figured out why I continue to practically devote my life to kicking a ball around a field every day.

No. I’m not going to tell you my answer, that is not the point of this post.

Rather you play a sport, are going to play a sport in college, play a sport currently in college, for fun or coach a sport, or simply hate every single sport ever created.

Think about your "why". Why do you do the things that you love to do? What brings Mr. and Mrs. Carey to continue to show up and do their half marathon training runs, when they both hate when there is running in a workout, what brings Mrs. Van back into the gym the day after Fran, why does Chris continue to show up at the gym everyday to coach even if the session didn't go as he wanted it to go, what brings my psych teacher to school everyday day when he knows no one watches his videos that he plays all hour, what brought Cec to move to the other side of the world to continue to play soccer, really what brings you back?

I don’t really have an ending or conclusion to this. I was just reminded of why I continue to play soccer and show up to the gym even though I hate practicing legless rope climbs and dips. I want people to remember their ‘why” and embrace it through every aspect of their life!

Also, I want to say congrats to Sam and Conamora for committing!

Thanks for taking the time to read my distraction from my psych teacher.

Another also, please let me know if you would sign a petition to prevent teachers from showing videos to teach a class. I’m running out of old website entries to read.
