Athlete of the Winter

To any outsiders or part-timers, this may come as a surprise. But if you have been consistent with us, then you could probably see this coming. Our Athlete of the Winter is none other than Mariah.

If you would have met Mariah during her early days with the Champion’s Club, you would notice that absolutely nothing has changed. She’s bubbly (hence the nickname “Bubs”), funny, and extremely loud. Yep, everything’s the same now…except for one thing: she’s a BEAST!

Much to my surprise, Ducky has transformed herself into one of the most dedicated athletes in the Champion’s Club. This winter was really her coming-out party. With no sport to play, Mariah used these past few months to take her training to another level.

Ducky’s power numbers have increased steadily. Highlighted by an 85 lb 3 rep-max overhead squat (highest among any girl not named Anita), and also breaking the century mark on the clean & jerk – maxing out at 105 lbs. In addition, she also has seen drastic improvements in bodyweight movements, such as pull-up, push-up, free handstand, and double under. Even her highly-despised running has got much better…well, a little better.

But in this case, the workouts don’t tell the whole story. Mariah’s enthusiasm and energy is matched by few in the weight room. She is welcoming to new people – even taking an opportunity to take a few new football kids through the warm-up. Above all else, she always seems to be happy.

Mariah, I know we’re not supposed to play favorites, but I think I can speak for everyone else in saying that you are by far one of our favorite members of the Champion’s Club and we are very proud of your improvements as an athlete. I can honestly say that I’m impressed with what you’ve done this winter. As a result, I now have higher expectations for you. You’re only a sophomore, so understand that you still have a lot of room to get better. Take these skills you’ve developed into the spring softball season and prove to us that this new dedication is not an act, but a habit.

Yeah good point. I'm all out of compliments for awhile.

Typical Ducky warm-up conversation:
Cera: And I remember the day, Chris said his first words, "Shiny peepeye no-no" whatever that means.
Ducky: It is simple. that means "get in the circle and show us a power clean"
Cera: How'd you know that?
Ducky: I am also a crossfitter. Thirteen of us watch at the same time. Thirteen times.
Cera: well, then... what does, "No-no Grunchy three-dee grr" mean?
Ducky: that means "Never make the Grunch mad"
Cera: Are you sure about that one?
Ducky: No. But it is good advice just the same.
