Good stuff all around from today's max effort back squats. The surprise of the day came from Javier Steinwascher this morning, topping out at 285 lbs.
Usually soccer players are not known for heavy back squats, but it looks like that's where Javier is headed. He has seen some serious improvement in his technique in the past month or so. Look for more of the same for the rest of the Summer.

Oh boy what good day it is. Covid is gone, Bernie sanders is president, heck we even canceled Greg Glassman! What a year! Please don't fact check those first 2 I am happy living in my own reality. BUT, most importantly all us crossfitters are back at the gym properly social distanced and using more lysol wipes than ever. And honestly I couldn't be happier because not being able to go the gym was rough and my motivation plummeted, BUT WE BACK!!
So why am I here? Well I happen to be champions club most loyal subscriber on YouTube I even clicked the bell for notifications. And I figured since we're all working out again I'd drop by to see how you guys are doing and talk some form. And Chris knows nothing gets me more excited than some big lifts. We've got some athletes pushing 3 plates on the back squat? Sign me up.
Alright first off, great lifts Javier. I remember when I started to move significant weight with back squat and dead lift at champions club and it was super rewarding.
My first gripe, shoes. Okay in high school I would lift barefoot so I can't really judge too much but this just doesn't make sense to me. If you only own standard running or tennis shoes I can sort of understand not wanting to wear those as the cushiness under load will feel strange and may even let your foot roll out of position a little as the heel compresses. But with such a wide stance wearing only socks it looks like you're about to slip and possibly injure yourself. Any flat bottomed shoe with a solid heel will still having you feeling connected to the ground while being much safer. I used to lift in vans and now it's usually the metcons, lifters can be an option later down the road. Alright I'll get off that soap box.
The only other thing I see is the stance. It's too wide and because of this you are straining incredibly hard to reach depth. And to your credit it looks like you're just barely getting there each rep. You clearly have the strength to move this weight pretty easily in my opinion it's just about setting up your feet so your legs can transmit all the force straight down rather than at extreme angles outward. Fix that and 3 plates will be easy.
One last thing, ditch the spotter. This may be a hard sell with you Chris but learning how to ditch a barbell from the bottom of the back squat upped my confidence a lot. Knowing that I didn't need to rely on a spotter and confident I wouldn't get pinned under the weight let me focus on only the lift and not being afraid to fail. Look it up its very simple and very safe.
Cheers everyone and stay safe :)
I second Jack's points on shoes and a depth check here. To take nothing away from the lift though - solid!
