New Graduate: Ethan + Blocked Practice Notes

Yesterday during the 5:30 session Ethan Hana got his first handstand push-up during the workout.

It seems like we used to only see Graduations happen during warmups, but since 2019 we have seen quite a few come during workouts. I think a lot of this has to do with allowing for more blocked practice during workouts.

Blocked practice just means doing the same thing over and over again in close sequence to each other. For example:

AMRAP in 20 minutes of: 5 thrusters, 10 kb swings, and 400m run would not give us a lot of time to practice squatting. 15 reps isn't that much in the grand scheme of things.

AMRAP in 20 minutes of: 20 thrusters, 20 kb swings, and 400m run would give us 40 chances per round to practice butt back and arches up.

A workout like yesterday that is rx'd 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 is a really effective dose when you have the technique of said movement. For athletes that don't, putting a time cap can give us more time to practice the skill. So for some of the afternoon groups we did 4 rounds of: 2:00 power cleans, 2:00 handstand push-ups. Ethan got his first, while Nick Krstich, Drew Webster, Jake Malak, and Josh VanDoorn all did HSPU in a workout for the first time.
