Coach's Corner: Blocked Practice

Kelly and Carl had a recent MWOD video where they discuss this concept called "blocked practice". Now this isn't blocked in the same sense was doing push-ups with your hands backwards or jumping with foam. If you are interested in a detailed explanation, I woudl highly recommend watching their video (no fee required). But basically this idea of blocked practice means repetition of the same movement.
The reason this is important is because this repetition gives you imediate feedback to take into your next rep. This is the basis for the thinking that your last rep should look better than your first rep. Here's a prime example from yesterday's max effort hang clean.
Marathon runner Matt Fecht had been working tirelessly to improve his bad habits with duck feet and trying to muscle through movement instead of trusting the technique. As we were working up in weight yesterday, I noticed things were going very well at 125 lbs. So we made the jump to 135 and I got the camera to show everyone how well he was looking. Unfortunately as you saw, his first rep looked like trash. But instead of "coaching him up", I just kinda sat back and let him figure it out for himself. And as a result, the reps seemed to get better as he went on - with the 4th being his best.
...........
This is something to think about when it comes to the majority of our workouts (not Cindy or Lifts 4 Gifts). Your next rep should always look better than your previous one. If it's not, then it is time to slow down or lower the weight.
