Campus Improv Eats: Houston Basketball

Mel sent me this last week, pulled from Houston's men's basketball strength coach - I'm assuming this was the breakfast trays handed out to the players.

Here's the breakdown:

  • Protein - steak, eggs
  • Carbohydrate - blueberries, blackberries, tomatoes and stuff on the eggs, oatmeal
  • Fat - no additional other than the assumed fat in the steak and eggs

Win or loss. My God this is a win. From what I know this is not typical of what is available to most college athletes on the regular. Not only is it probably real food but it's portioned and balanced really well. You can always nitpick stuff but realistically this is fantastic.

Next time. When Mel sent me this I hadn't seen a single Tweet since National Signing Day in December, and sure enough I clicked on Alan Bishop's name, then scrolled through his other meal pictures, and then saw videos of his kids power cleaning and push jerking with good form, then about 10 minutes later - after reading about how he likes GPP - I realized what I was doing and x'd out of it, looking over my shoulder to make sure nobody saw I was looking at Twitter.

To me, the big thing about this meal is context. What time did this breakfast happen? Was it before or after a practice? What did the dinner look like last night? Did the kids actually eat all of the food or did they just toss it and grab a bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats back in their dorm? Were they still hungry 3ish hours after they ate? The internet has no shortage of showing highlights, and anyone with the slightest bit of experience in sports knows that highlights can be misleading. So for a program that obviously cares about health like Houston, I'd really be interested to see this meal in the context of the other meals and stuff.
