Quote of the Week vol. 225

My first editorial of the year comes out tomorrow (Thursday) at 9 am. College Athlete Admission Standards. It's pretty long, but obviously has a lot of thought put into it. Basically I want to be able to use it, and the charts in specific, as references for parents and kids at the gym.

"Basketball should not have timeouts"

- Brian from MGoBlog

This was said in wake of last night's Michigan game, in which an instant replay took over 5 minutes to overturn the play above. On one hand, you have officials and higher-ups who genuinely want to get things as correct as possible on the court or field. On the other hand, you have fans who get to watch the back of a ref and players who are taken out of the flow of their game by coaching timeouts, TV timeouts, and instant replays.

What do you think is more important: game flow or getting things "right"?

Quote of the Week vol. 223

Me: "Would you have done anything differently in high school, knowing what you know now?"

David: "Yeah, I would have played football in the fall - not cross country - and basketball in the winter, then just ran the 800 for track in the spring. And not worried about trying to run in college."

Me: "But wouldn't you want to be able to say that you're a D1 athlete?"

David: "No, because saying that doesn't matter unless it's football or basketball. Nobody else cares."

There is an editorial in the works about the criteria for playing college sports. Stay tuned.

Pics of the Week: Bromm, Beilein, and Baby Drew

Our first picture this week comes from Katie Bromm, who failed to keep DJ Wilson from leaving Michigan for the NBA draft but still has the audacity to take a picture with John Beilein, whom she described in a text message as "the holiest person I have ever met".

Secondly, Mr. Maslowski sent in a picture from Drew's soccer tournament this weekend, where his team won the championship.

Body Language pt. 1: Geno Auriemma

Shannon sent me this video over the weekend and I think it is a great message to share. Geno Auriemma is the head coach for the UConn women's basketball team that loses a game once every 5 years or so. At a press conference he shared his thoughts on playing time and recruiting - it turns out most of it comes down to body language.

I also like this quote:

"They haven't even figured out which foot to use as their pivot foot and they're gonna act like they're really good players."

Quote of the Week vol. 185

"Ooh, caught him with a nickle-and-dimer..."

- Bill Raftery, CBS announcer, any time there is a soft foul call.

Should flagrant fouls be reviewable?

Pic of the Week: Bromm and the Boys in Blue

"Please dont ask if I cried after" - Katie Bromm. 7:42 pm tonight.

Quote of the Week vol. 183

"Glue guys aren't superstars. They're not the No. 1 option. They just do things only coaches really appreciate. The stars get the headlines, but glue guys help you get in the winner's circle. I don't think you can win without having that kind of player."

- Dick Vitale.

In related news, Athlete of the Winter comes out on Saturday at 12 noon.
