Coach's Corner: Kyron

Another Kowalski: Status Report for our Double-A session, this time with Kyron Burton.

So Kyron is an 8th grader who had 80+% Summer attendance with the Rookies and is now back to the once-a-week thing with the Double-A group. This is perfectly okay with me so long as he is hitting some checkpoints along the way.

On Monday he was in for the 25-minute AMRAP of cleans, push-ups, and wallballs and picked back up on the clean form after a few rounds. But after the workout I wanted to see if he retained any deadlift stuff, so I had him try some attempts on Dillon's and Mr. Kuiper's bars. Here's how 125 and 145 looked.

This 8th grade age is tricky for me because on the one hand we get some kids who are clearly ready and interested in working out on the regular (Schulz, Lulu, probably Loretta next year), and there are also the ones who aren't. Kyron falls in the latter category and nearly always chooses to play when given the choice both at a regular session and at the Double-A session.

Yet, he can still deadlift 125 lbs. and knows when his back is flat or rounded. I could not do that as an 8th grader. So I say Kyron is doing just fine at the moment. when he starts feeling embarrassed that his mom lifts more than him is when the time will be right to switch to full-time.
