Super Bowl Workout Recap

I am always hesisant to bring out the Super Bowl workout every year - and some years we don't - because we really need the right crowd for it. I think it's safe to say we had the right crowd yesterday.

An equal mix of parents, rookies, and veteran kids made for an intense hour. We modified our traditional format quite a bit: We divided the group into pairs, then we grouped those pairs onto either the Rams side or the Patriots side. With 4 teams on each, we went at 5 workouts:

Workout 1 - 200 wallballs for time (however strategized)
Workout 2 - 5:00 hang clean and jerk ladder
Workout 3 - 75 waterfall burpees + 1 rope climb
Workout 4 - 4:00 of Bear Crawl relay
Workout 5 - Dodgeball

Partner were awarded 1 point for 1st place finish, 2 for 2nd, and so on (bear crawl and dodgeball was 1 for timming team and 2 for losing team). The lowest score at the end would be declared the winner.

This year, the winners were the Rams!

There was not the usual amount of cheating during this workout, but with Hunter and Jonah on the same team, you can be sure the counting was suspect. Either way, I like how it turned out. We'll make a few tweaks for next year (a signup is unrealistic but would be really helpful) and I have my plans on bringing it back.

Full workout results can be seen here.

Here's the Bear Crawl relay highlights:

Theme Workout Announcement: Super Bowl 2019

We certainly need a pick-me-up for this weekend, and we're going to get it. This Sunday at 12 noon will be the return of our traditional Super Bowl Workout!

All College Kids and such are welcome back for this one as usual. There will also be a slightly different format to this one. I'm aiming for 4 small workouts with the burpee waterfall tiebreaker at the end, and I'll try and organize them so there's minimal standing around/sitting out. Captains and teams will be determined day of.

See you there!

From the Vault: Super Bowl Theme Workout

In the very first year of the Champions Club, 2010, we held a Super Bowl workout with a guest-appearance from Jarrod and a few of his peeps. The only thing I remember about it was my stereotypically motivated drafting of Jarrod, only to see him lose to Anita in the final sprint. I have never been so disappointed in him.

The most memorable Super Bowl Workout, however, came at the peak of The Freaks. February 1, 2014.

You can see Shannon, Erika, Elizabeth, Bubs, Murley, Ricky, and David Saporito involved in blatant cheating. Even Aaron I'm Going Be A Priest Augustyn cheated at the 1:30 mark. After the burpee waterfall, Bubs and Amy Potter's fury escalated and led into the most epic tiebreaking photo-finish in Champions Club history:

We still don't know for sure who won the bear crawl relay, but Team Sap/Shannon got the W on paper. Here was their post-game press conference.

...........

We've been hit or miss on the Super Bowl workout and it usually depends on how the team workouts have been looking. It's not official yet, but I think we're going to roll with it this year. It would be 12 noon on Super Bowl Sunday. Anyone down?

New Year's Workout Poll

In the past we have done an 11 pm workout on New Year's Eve, ending at midnight and celebrating the New Year. If we get enough people we'll do it.

Anyone in?

Theme Workout Announcement: Christmas Workout 2018

Six months ago we were almost a week into our most populated Summer of all time. As the weeks progressed it was apparent the gym was going about as well as it's ever been. The Summer is something I always have in my plans, no matter what month it is. But not far behind is Christmas break. We've already seen a few college kids come home, and with more expected on the way it should be a fun couple weeks. At the core of these few weeks is our annual Christmas Workout Spectacular. As usual, it will be on Monday, December 24 at 9 am. This workout usually lasts a little bit over an hour because there are actually three mini-workouts included: Christmas Eve Commotion, The Magi Mile, and Twelve Days of Burpees. Afterwards we usually have waffles, cookies, milk, and other assostments of unfavorable sugary carbohydrates.

The pride of our Athletes of the Summers right here.In the past we've also done Secret Santa and card/board games after the workout, so if anyone wants to set that up feel free. This workout is open to any and all Champions Club college kids, as well as our Babies and middle school crew, so hopefully we can get a turnout like last year. I bought some extra wallballs and we have extra floor space this time around.

One thing coaching the Babies session has taught me is it's usually better to have less of something and keep them wanting more than to go overboard on it. This is what I try to do with Theme Workouts in the Summer, and this is also why I think Christmas Break goes over so well. We get to see the people we haven't seen since August in short, 1-hour (or more) snippets, and it lasts for about 2 weeks. Even Nick Bewick and Danielle Woorden would seem pleasant and enjoyable in those short doses. We get to see the best of Ricky Carey, Alyssa Jabara, Lindsey Eason, and Kris Campbell. If that doesn't lighten your mood, then nothing will.

I hope you guys (and myself) really take a sec to appreciate the Community we have and enjoy the people that make the Champions Club what it is. Even kids who have left for other gyms will swear up and down that no place matches what we have here. If things fall right, I think this Christmas could be our best one yet. So recruit those lazy session-mates of yours and let's have a great two weeks!

Monday. 9 am. See you there!

Thanksgiving Workout 2018 Recap

What a session! For the second year in a row, we exceeded 30 people in attendance our annual Thanksgiving Workout. 32 was the magic number today - well, 33 if you count Saporito coming in late as usual. We made use of the turf side to host the crowded workout and once we got rolling everything went pretty smooth.
