Media Primer pt. 3: Overload and Recency Bias

Got a random pop quiz for you today.

Without going back to look, what were Mr. Ron's two main nutrition points of advice from his post?

...........

I had a good conversation with Jay last night after the session about football. Now understand, Jay (and Jesse) is someone footbal fans need to look at with the respect of a grandfather cutting his own grass in the middle of spring: prime wet season. Jay has been a Lions fan since I've known him growing up three doors down from me. That means he endured the 0-16 season, Calvin Johnson's completing the process, 4 straight first round picks on WRs, 17 straight first round picks on TEs, an Aaron Rogers Hail Mary, and Dan Orlovsky running out of the back of his own endzone. Yet every Sunday the humongous Lions inflatable lawn ornament would be proudly displayed for the entire neighborhood and we'd spend halftime and post-game in the street and on our neighbor's lawn playing the touchdown game (unless we saw Jacob walking around the corner, at which point we'd run inside. Poor fella.)

So when I asked how down he was feeling after they lost to San Fran, he said he was bummed for sure, but also a little relieved.

How, could a Lions fan be so relieved after a - literally - once in a lifetime season?

"Well, it was just kind of a lot," he said. "I mean, I felt the sense of urgency to read every article, watch every pregame and post game show, listen to every talking head with an opinion, and... yeah."

Yeah indeed my guy. I can feel you, after witnessing Michigan win a NATIONAL FREAKING CHAMPIONSHIP. I still can't believe I'm typing those words. And I also can't believe how much of an addiction to Michigan-related media I've had this season. MGoBlog is a given, but WTKA with Sam Webb, Locked on the Wolverines with Isiah Hole, On3 with Chris Balas, Rich Eisen, Joel Klatt... and even NFL "insiders" like Adam Shefter... and here is the problem with that: I don't remember the two points from Mr. Ron's post. I, who read it twice; I, who posted it on this actual site; I, who read it all the way over again once I posted it to see how the format looked; yup, I only remember one of the points: simplify.

Okay, that was from, what, two weeks ago? Legit reason to forget?

How bout this: what were Mr. Kuiper's lessons from the Covid Ward? Again, without looking.

Remember our posts you bastards!

Ummm... I think I remember him talking about eating a lot? Not not eating a lot? One of the two. I would assume one of the reasons for not knowing off the top of my head is because there have been three posts in between it and this one, all within the last few days. It reminds me of this scene from Pursuit of Happ"y"ness:

When something important comes up during your day, the more things that come after it - important or not - the more difficult it is to remember the original important thing. Also, doing a bunch of stuff before the important thing also makes it difficult to soak in everything once you're there. And this is part of why I believe I'm outnumbered when working with you guys on your health. You'll catch something important at a session - getting in a line and ranking your abilities, the feeling of falling when you're running, a connection with someone you're working out with - and then your attention will be diverted elsewhere. And then elsewhere again. And then elsewhere again. And then elsewhere again. And then the next day when you come in you're like, "okay, how did I do that good thing again?" Or it will take 15 minutes of the current session to get your head out of whatever you were doing previously and before being present with us. You numbnuts only get to see the Vans and the Careys and the Nevarez zoo exhibit once a day and you're going to be mentally late for that?

Here is what is for sure not going to happen: you come to the Saturday session at 10 am and then go home and meditate under a boab tree in your back yard for the rest of your day. Here is also what won't happen: you skip work or school just to mentally prepare to perform your best for the 3:30 session. I don't want any of those to happen wither.

Here is what is going to happen, though: the more things you pile on before or after a session - or before or after anything important to you - the less likely you are to retain the important stuff. So thus begins our mission to subtract. Keep an eye out for things that don't need to be there. Watch for things that are set up for the sole purpose of grabbing and keeping your attention. I have a hunch that the quicker those things go, the quicker you'll get the results you're looking for.
