They Don't Do This on Lone Pine

Yesterday at the 4:30 session we were making some jokes about the difficulty it is to find the Cranbrook basketball gym in the midst of the overall hugeness of their high school campus. One thing led to another - mostly assisted by Mr. Robinson - and we ended up inventing a make believe CrossFit gym on Lone Pine Road that had heated pull-up bars and servants who sweat for you. So if you're still lost on the title, I suppose you had to be there.

But either way, I thought it was a great lead into our workout today: the last time Candy came up was over lockdown. We went to Exchange Park. It was the first time Aaron worked out with the Steinwaschers. It was the first time I ever heard of a wind advisory and it was also the first time I let someone drive me home after a session (thank you Paris!). And it was the last time Mr. Malak would ever confuse the Exchange Park by his house with the Exchange Park that was 800m away from the gym. The playground was taped off and since we didn't want to give anyone a reason we resorted to using rings on the tennis court and squat jumps on the basketball court. There was absolutely nothing getting in the way of the wind from slicing into our collective faces.

So this morning when Aaron, Cecilia, Dillon, and Jessica came in, we took a field trip back to Exchange; I wanted to exaggerate strength and stamina needed from the rarely-seen benchmark, and I thought pulling and pushing with odd objects would help that. I also wanted to give a nod to the time period that shaped our gym and the people in it.

I also wanted to just do some shit they wouldn't do at Lone Pine CrossFit, and that's why the rest of the afternoon sessions went there too. The morning session with the 4 special kids got exactly the stimulus I was hoping for; the afternoon sessions did nothing of the sort and it was awesome. I don't know why I even brought the timer; the creativity of the push-ups, pull-ups, and squats made for the most enjoyable and beneficial "for quality" workout I can remember. Here is a picture of Jay doing squats on the top of a dinosaur head.

It was cold, windy (though not as bad as the last time we did Candy here), and not very convenient for the people at the next session walking into an empty gym wondering where everyone went and why the doors were unlocked. Still everyone seemed to get a good dose.

Thank you guys for being as tolerant, tough, and resilient as you are!
