The Summer of "Me"

... That saying has been going through my head since I wrote the Summer Invite, and I'm still not entirely sure it will turn into a post of its own. But I'll try.

Basically every time I go into a Summer I like to have a theme in mind, sometimes it's known to you guys and sometimes I just kind of keep it to myself. 2019 was the Summer of We - and it produced 130 people; Summer 2020 and 2021 were both the Summers of Me -as in literally me (Chris); and I really think Summer 2022 needs to be the Summer of "Me" - as in all you individual me's. From the Invite:

You guys all know what you really need: prioritizing your health and fitness with a group of people that give you energy rather than take it. Yet for 9 months you've been at the mercy of your schedule and "urgent" things and your mind and body have spent a lot of time away from what you really need. But now that is about to change.

I have every single possible personal bias when it comes to wanting you guys to be here consistently, yet every single time I ask an open-ended question the answer comes back the same, whether it's from Reese, or Lulu, or Mr. Carey, or Dylan, or Owen: "I literally want to be at the gym every day."

My answer to that is to simply make it happen. This is the time to practice saying no to things and people that take your energy, this is the time to start a habit you needed to start a long time ago, this is the time to organize the things that are really important to you, this is the time Mrs. Hana and Mrs. Jayme improve on being selfish, this is the time Josh Van and Mici stick it to the coaches that cut them, this is the time Mr. Curtis subtracts 1/3 of a human being from his being, this is the time Aaron Sexton takes care of his family after he's taken care of himself.

In fact, let me check the roster real quick...

Yeah... I could make a case that every person in the Champions Club needs to be more selfish, ranging from a little to a lot. It feels odd to say that because it's always been the other way around when coaching basketball and track. But with Week 1 of Summer almost in the books, that constant chorus of "me" is ringing every time I either talk with someone individually, or overhead a group talking.

"This is my place."

"This is the hour I disconnect from everything."

"This is my favorite time of the day."

"This is what makes me feel the most accomplished."

Nobody ever does anything they don't want to do, which means that even things like going to work or school, paying taxes, daily commutes, and... cutting the grass... are all choices. It's about time to start making choices with "me" in mind first.
