Identify the Choice: The First of Hopefully Many

Well, it looks like my writing is really going to... /checks Crystal's new swear word substitution paper... nerts?... yeah, we'll go with nerts... because I don't have a good intro to this post.

So... intro.

Good, now that that's out of the way, I'd like to bring yourself to attention of whatever it is you're doing at this exact moment. You are reading this, standing or sitting, on a phone or computer. Me: I'm writing this obviously. But more importantly, I am writing this because of a choice I made, and that choice came between two things:

12 people who actually read these posts all the way through vs. Owen Munk

Pick me Chris!

The case for 12pwartpatwt. I haven't been doing daily posts on the main page, and I stopped posting the workout results (at least for now), and am not feeling energized enough to have 12 individual conversations with the people that need it. And writing helps me organize my thoughts.

The case for Owen Munk. Owen's my guy, and also a Champions Club Board Member. I just got off the phone with him talking about how ACL injuries work and whether or not most physical therapy practices act like band-aids. He has a sudden interest in being a PT from the sounds of it, or at least learning more about injuries, and I would like to send him some of Kelly Starrett's stuff because that's who I learned from.

In the end, obviously, I chose to write this post, partly out of guilt from not writing lately, and partly because the policy for the Champions Club Board Members is that when the vote is tied, Owen's vote doesn't count.

...........

Now here's my intro for a few made up scenarios.

Scenario 1

The Colussi family is out to eat at the most luxurious McDonald's restaurant in Oakland County (the one on 13 & Rochester with all the sports memorabilia). All four of them are sitting down with their meals in front of them when Coach Casey's phone goes off: it's his boss from work.

  • The choice: Coach Casey's boss or Coach Casey's family. Regardless of what Kanye says, you can't focus on two things at once. Coach can either decide his family if more important in that moment, or decide his boss is more important in that moment.

Scenario 2

It's 11:16 pm and Chase is by himself in one of the most intense laptop sessions of his life... what!?... get your minds out the gutter! He has a paper due 1st hour tomorrow for World History on the Byzantine Empire and its effects on the rest of Mediterranea. But that's not all, he also has a game tomorrow night against West Bloomfield where he will be expected to play all 32 minutes.

  • The choice: The Troy High basketball team or Chase's parents. I really don't know too many kids who actually do well in school out of pure joy for learning math and English; they either want to go to a good college, or are fearful of the wrath from an authority figure (parent, coach, grandparent, etc.) My guess is Mr. Kuiper would unleash the fury of a thousand Tom Izzos Outside the coach's box if Chase brought home an F on a paper he had been procrastinating. On the other hand, Chase loooves hoop, and his team has a legit chance to make a run in the playoffs this year.

Scenario 3

It's the 8th round of Tabata squats and Jay has made a, out-of-character critical mistake: he went out faster than he wanted.

Round 1: 22 "This should be okay"

Round 2: 22 "Oof, what's this I feel in my legs?"

Round 3: 22 "This was a mistake"

Round 4: 22 "Short man's exercise"

Round 5: 22 "Seriously Chris, shut up about my form"

Round 6: 22 "GIVE ME CANCER NOW GOD"

Round 7: ...?

  • The choice: keeping his integrity or being a pansy. Squats are not like push-ups; when your arms die out there's nothing you can do. For Jay to do anything less than 22 squats in a workout like this would come down to a conscious choice that his comfort is more important than his performance.

The more I get to talk to you guys on the side - especially one last week with Saporito - the more I feel like seeing that there's a choice behind whatever it is you're doing will make things run a lot more smooth. Nobody ever does anything they don't want to do, so it comes down to simply identifying the choice and then choosing. There is no right or wrong answer in any of the above scenarios, and there rarely is. Just be real with what you're up against.
