Me Time: Mr. Gjon

Every day in first grade I told my mom she had to be in the first row of cars in the after school pickup line. My mom, being my mom, made sure to be there... except for the one day she wasn't; I panicked, cried, and ran back inside to have Mrs. Clark call and make sure everything was okay.
Everything was okay. I was just being a pansy. Mrs. Clark didn't even make the phone call, but instead pointed out my mom's white van waiting in the second row of cars.
...........
Mr. Gjon: "What's up ladies!" Mr. Carey: "Do those glasses make you blind?"
On two occasions last week Mr. Gjon was tasked with picking up Lulu and Dita from one of their athletic functions - either volleyball or soccer, or both. The tricky part was their practice ended at the same time our session ended, so he was planning on leaving us early to pick them up on time. It really didn't take much convincing: he stayed for our full workout and Dita and Lulu still managed to be picked up at a reasonable time (it is still unknown whether they got home at a reasonable time, as Mr. Gjon is known to small talk in parking lots from time to time.)
The interesting thing I found here was how Mr. Gjon's instinct was "Lulu's out at 5:30. I have to be there at 5:30." That was probably my mom's reasoning too, as well as a lot of you parents with kids in after-school stuff. I think the root of this conflict comes from viewing everything about your kids with the same level of importance: being on time to a birthday party, being on time to practice pickup, and being on time to a playoff game all involve being on time, but there is a clear distinction between which ones have some room to flex (practice, birthday) and which ones don't (game). Like, if Mr. Gjon is late picking up Dita he's a bad father, when in reality he was just lying on the ground after a few benchmark workouts.
Mr. Gjon has been takes on more responsibilities that most of us can imagine, and hopefully this is a sign that he's making sure to keep his health and fitness the priority so he can keep helping others.
