Three Quotes from Mrs. G

While doing our session this morning, Mrs. Gloria had a few one-liners that I'd like to share and add notes on.

"I'm beginning to notice that I'm imitating K's posture."

This quote was made in regards to her roommate, who is not quite as physically fit as Mrs. Gloria, and has adopted a shuffling walk and a slouch. There are two reasons I found this interesting: first, it reminded me of when I cured Mr. Curtis's limping back in September by the age-old coaching method of saying "can you stop limping please?" (I don't think I said please); secondly it also reminded me of Dylan Colussi's circle.

There are some issues that need to get worked on through lacrosse balls, hip capsules, mashing, couch stretching, and the like, and there's other ones that just simply require you to stop doing the thing you are doing. Experience will help you tell the difference.

I have no proof of this, but I would imagine (and it would make sense) that the ability to mimic people is more of an unconscious thing built into our DNA than it is a conscious thing. My experience coaching the Babies supports this, as well as coaching Mrs. Nevarez and Zander, who routinely look left and right to make sure they're doing this foreign thing called a push-up the right way. Point is: imitating other people is going to happen whether we want to or not. That is why it's so important to carefully select the people you hang around and the people you watch on TV and the people you listen to. You will mimic them for better or worse.

"When a student is ready, a teacher will show up."

This one made think of the I Don't Like post just a few scrolls down. Mrs. Gloria used this in reference to the first time we talked; I had been walking by and waiving since I was in high school on my walks up to Bishop Foley, but for whatever reason it took until 2018 for us to finally stop and have a conversation about anything meaningful... which just so happened to coincide with her wanting to make health and fitness her priority.

I am am coach, you are a parent, or a teammate, or boss, or big sister, or whatever other leadership role you might play. But you are only that if there is a student is ready, otherwise you're just a regular dude in that person's life. There might be some creativity involved in encouraging the prospective student to be "ready" but until the timing is right the teaching won't be as effective.

"Better enjoy this sun today because it's gonna be cloudy all week!"

Every now and then I take advantage of the fact that I can say just about anything I want to Mrs. G and she'll come back; "You know you're old when you start saying things like this!"

The weather forecast is one of the dumbest things to pay attention to. Not because of its accuracy (or lack of), but because it immediately takes us away from the present. How is this info going to change my planning for how I would normally pack clothes in January in Michigan? And more importantly, what does Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday's weather have to do with this beautiful sun shining through the garage doors right now?

That is all. I need to get better at writing conclusions. So in the meantime, here's a picture of Mrs. Gloria doing kettlebell swings with Ol' Red.

And smiling.
