It's been a while since there was a post on pain faces. In the first installment about faces twisted like pretzels, there's a couple of reasons that discourage the habit. Aside from looking dumb, pain faces can also start some pretty nasty breathing diffiencies. However, there's a psychological point as well. If you can get rid of the pain face, you might get rid of...get this...some pain!

In psychology there's several main theories on how we experience the world around us. And of course, none of them have been proven 100% correct, but none of them have quite been disproved. One of the earliest theories states that the physical demonstration of an emotion can actually trigger the emotion. In simple terms, think of the people who tell you keep smiling all the time and you'll eventually be happy. Although it's super annoying, they actually might have a point. According to this theory, if you're making a pain face, you will be miserable/angry/desperate- all things that make pain all that more acute. If you feel a pain face coming on, shut it down. Might make that pain a little bearable.
