Coach's Corner: Javier

Yesterday the split jerks gave us an opportunity to check out our squatting habits while adding in two major movement factors: 1) speed and 2) upright torso. Here's how Javier looked during the last round.

The only thing I really wanted everyone to focus on was the timing of the movement, and this left the positions looking a little off. Javier was no exception. In a regular squat he is able to hide his tight hips and ankles because his torso is allowed to bend forward and he can go slow enough to think about keeping everything still. In the split jerk descent his knees come forward a bit, but the thing to notice is how his feet spin out every time. This habit can obviously lead to injury over time, but it is also leaking power out the inside of the leg.

If I had to guess, I would think the first thing to try and fix on this would be ankle/calf mobility. After that we can look upstream to the hip.
