Quick Feet in Sports

In almost any sport, you will see drills used in practice that calls for quick feet. You can see different varities of it, but it all provides the player to stay on their toes, change direction, and increase speed and agility. Football, for an example, can use the ladder where the player goes in and out of. Soccer can use a ball for toe taps as quick as they can on top of the ball. I do side to side drills in softball as quick as the player can go because you don't want "heavy" feet when fielding a ball. All these drills are practical in a game situation, so it is practiced to become efficient at it. But did you know that we can do quick feet in the water? Besides the constant leg kicking the swimmer is doing, there is another way we can promote it. Swimming is different than the other sports because there is no contact with the ground. The only contact made is jumping off the block, the wall for turns, and the finishing touch at the wall. Because the swimmer should already be kicking, we can make the jump off the block and the turns more efficient. I wanted to share a video of one of my swimmers, John, and a drill we use to promote getting a stong but quick push off the wall.

John kicks as hard as he can for 10 seconds and then does a turn into a sprint across the pool. You never want to hang around in that flip turn. The slower the turn, the slower your time will be. Like a box jump or burpee, you want to get off that wall once you touch it.

Flips turns can make or break you in a race. There were many times I see one of my swimmers in the lead get caught on the wall in a race and the guy next to them does a better one, and catches up for the win. I think it is cool that you can do different drills in other sports and see that they can relate to eachother in the end. So for John, kicking as hard and then turning as fast is the equivalent of doing quick feet on the court and then sprinting down it.
