Coach's Corner: My Older Website Practices

The Freaks era of 2013-2014 was insane here. The more I think about it and the more I talk to people like Katie Bromm and Bubs and Ricky, the more I think that's going to be a once-every-15-years kind of environment we have. The kids absolutely ran the show. Emma, Murley, Amy, and Jason were all teenagers pulling coaching duties, the Banets, Saporito, Ricky, and JZ were all coming into their own as legit CrossFit athletes. And Lauren freaking Higgins... yeah man.

So in the midst of this we used to have a standard started in Summer 2013 of doing 3 website posts per day. Why? At the time, it seemed to be what we needed. We underwent a big transformation going from school club to official business with no idea how to be a business, and we also overhauled a ton of old movement habits into the ones you know today: feet together, elbows in, butt back, unweighting (more on unweighting in an upcoming post). With me as the full-time coach and anywhere from 1-4 part-time kid coaches, there was a lot more videos and coaches corners and everything. Also, I felt the need to document the incredible group we had. On that final note, I was right.

Where, in retrospect, I was not right was the self-made standard of posting with insane frequency. In early 2014 I expressed my frustration by blaming everyone else. This post from early 2014 was about how people need to comment more on the site (which, ironically, garnered the most comments by any post in this site's history). Enjoy!

How to Use This Website pt. 2

September 2013 - fun fact, this is actually the first workout Jacob ever walked out on.One of the things I really critiqued on myself recently is trying to figure out how much of the stuff I do during the day is important and how much of it is not. Aside from the reasons above, making a guideline to do 3 posts per day was something I probably did subconsciously to give me something to do. We had no 8:30 am session at the time, and the first session didn't start until 3:15. So this was probably a case of trying to make myself feel busy. It's actually kind of embarrassing to read, not because of the language (though I did catch the B-word in there) or how I called out people, but because I didn't realize the comments weren't coming in the posts because the majority of them weren't worth commenting. They shared good info, they highlighted good movement and performances, but they weren't important. At least some of them.

In retrospect, it might have been better to limit to one post per day, thus making it a tryout of sorts to see what content would make it to the front page. And the time I saved there might have been used to connect better with The Freaks and make sure the new kids and new parents felt like they belonged.

I really enjoy the content on the site, and I appreciate how much effort you put into it. I make sure to check in every day for the new postings. I think one post a day is plenty. Keep 'em coming.

Do you tell all the new people about the site when they come in? During the summer, a few of the new people seemed to not know about the site when I made references about something that was posted.

Not as much as I need to, that's for sure.

I caught the F-word in that post.

I enjoy reading the majority of the posts you write. I appreciate the time and effort put into the articles. I especially like when you link to other articles....that allows me to sink deeper into a black hole of reading and get lost for an hour or so! I agree that many newer people are not familiar with the website.
