Kowalski: Status Report Says the Want is There

I'd like you guys to think about Mallory Colussi for a minute; her basketball game is coming around but she doesn't obsess about it like Dylan or Coach Casey, she made the All-Star softball team but I'm not sure Mrs. Tara has the willpower to grant her 7 more years of that sport, she does ninja course, which is functional but has a limited shelf life, she does the Double-A session but almost always opts for playing instead of the workout. If there is one thing Mallory Colussi is passionate about, my best guess would be air conditioning.
Yet, 5 minutes before the Disney Workout I heard this whisper in my left ear as I was walking by the GHD.
"Hey Chris, can I work out?"
Maybe Josh, we'll see I thought to myself. It was a reflex. But I reflexed wrong. Though JB can be easily mistaken for a girl sometimes, these words did not come from Josh Bennis's voice. They came from Mallory's. It was as if I was back in 11th grade and staring at a math problem or an Old Spice stick, not exactly sure what to make of it. Mallory Colussi, Mallory Colussi, unprompted and unincentivized, asked to work out. At the Disney Workout - probably the second hardest Theme Workout behind Shark Week. I was so proud of her in that moment, more proud than I maybe have ever been for one of our Double-A kids.
So of course I told her no.
You can't hide back there forever!
But as fate would have it, we had an odd number and I went back and asked her to be partnered with Loretta. I wish I could say I wasn't surprised to see her deadlift with a flat back and do wallballs with good form, but I was in doubt until she proved me wrong. It was very dope!

Now, I'd like you guys to think about...
Yes, Cameron...
You want to do what?...
But how are we going to fit a rocket ship through our garage doors?...
Oh, just open them? I see. Should've thought of that.
He had the same conversation with Cecilia in Summer 2019Okay, now I'd like you guys to think about Cameron Bewick. No, no, wait. Just think about Nick Bewick and his overall... er... girth (hide the rollers from Malak). Nick Bewick is a strapping young lad with a blended mixture of science trivia, pushing strength, and lawn care perfectly fitted into every inch of his current figure - which is slimming down quite nicely, by the way. This dispersed intellectual and emotional load is proportioned in a way that makes him right for us: it's a potent dose of Bewick, but an appropriate dose of Bewick.
Lil' Cameron is an absolute menace; he's all of the intellectual and emotional load of Bewick but forcefully stuffed into 3'10" of a 7 year old boy. Poor kid, he's a human Starburst Mini; no wonder he goes on rages where he uses every ounce of his willpower to resist spontaneous combustion.
But two Sundays ago he said this...
"Hey Chris, when can I start doing workouts with the older group that comes in before me?"
... in the middle of a run-on paragraph about bringing down the bikes down from the loft. He didn't have a transition into this question, nor did it seem to lead anywhere because when I told him "not yet" he simply resumed marking out foot-lengths on the floor of where he thought the bikes should go, as if the question never happened. But it didn't slip past either myself of Nick, and we're still marinating on it a week later.

Finally, I'd like you guys to think about something you wanted that you could never have, or it took a while to get. Your job? Your husband or wife or girlfriend or boyfriend? An award or a place on a team? A victory over Ohio State? Something that was denied to you, or egotistically denied by you. The longer it occupies that space juuuuuuuuuust away from arm's reach, the more you want to it. Sometimes. It can't be a piece of broccoli or a mosquito, but it definitely holds true for certain things, especially if they involve self-improvement. And so far, the evidence is pointing towards the Champions Club Farm System being one of those things it works for, and man, is that ever an important thing to have in this setting; the prerequisite for doing a 7-minute Helen is actually wanting to do Helen in 7 minutes.
Making something fun and enjoyable can produce that "want" initially, but it's difficult to see that lasting beyond the first failure. I think a more effective way to produce the "want" is to set your eyes on something that is not available to your ability level right now, but might be with enough work. Waiting until the right time is an underrated ability.
