Sunday Highlights: The New Babies Session

While our OG Babies have now graduated on to either Double-A or the regular group, we managed to get a good Babies session back up and running over the Summer and that has carried on so far this fall.
One of the things we've been emphasizing the last few weeks is falling. With our previous generation I didn't quite get the returns I was hoping for out of the emphasis on jumping - specifically the elasticity and springiness. Which, now that I think about it, makes sense; that is a organic change that needed to hapen over time and once-a-week for, like, 17 minutes probably wasn't enough of a dose to make someone go from flat feet to bouncing like a sprinter.
So this time around we're going the neurological route. The thinking behind this is still a work in progress but so far it goes like this: when we are learning a new skill, volume is really important to make that happen. In other words, shooting 5 free throws with good form probably won't make that habit as permanent as it would if you shot 200 free throws with good form.
When it comes to falling, jumping off 2 45-lb. plates won't get you as much falling time as jumping off the 15-in. box, and that won't get you as much falling time as jumping off three 15-in. boxes stacked up on top of each other. Why falling? Because I've seen how much it holds you older kids and parents back, and also how long (and annoying) it can be to address later in life.
Here's how that looks in the practical sense.
About 20 minutes of faceplants and flips into the blue beanbag. It's awesome!
