From the Vault: Ouch Oly Lifts

Today we know Jay as the bearded bandit who's good at everything, and Bubs as the grunch who lives in Florida now but somehow manages to always find her way back. There was a point in time that Jay was clean shaven and Bubs was generally okay to be around. That time was 2011, coming off a Summer in the Fieldhouse where both were Summer rookies and victims of our old coaching strategies.

Here's Jay's 1 RM power clean from the Fieldhouse:

And here's Bubs doing a 1 rm clean and jerk a few months later when we moved over to the New Old Weight Room:

Another coach and I were having this discussion a while back, but I honestly can't remember what I was coaching before I learned about midline stability, loading order, and laws of torque. Also, the emphasis on skill/timing of the movements, not just the still positions, is something we constantly reinforce.

There is an old saying that goes something along the lines of "CrossFit done poorly is still more effective than anything else done well." This has been modified a bit lately because people are using heavier weights now than they used to - which can really mess you up with bad form - but the fact that we had so many kids doing CrossFit effectively at the time with great results in their sports and a very low injury rate really speaks to the effectiveness of CrossFit's foundation.

The nitpicking is for both longevity and peak performance. Is Jay safe above? Yes. Can he clean 225 for 3 reps like he can now with the technique above? No. Is Bubs safe above? Probably. Is that a good thing to be practicing rep after rep, year after year? Probably not.

Lastly, we change our practices all the time based on 1) sources I trust and 2) clinical trials that happen every day at 8:30 am, 4:30 pm, 5:30 pm, and 6:30 pm. You guys are all parts of ongoing experiments to find out what things work best. It is really a testament to people like Jay and Bubs who have stuck around for so long and been flexible enough to erase old habits from their toolkit and bring in new ones.
