Case Study in Set Your Hours: Chris Being a Grunch in 2014

I was just on the phone with someone in the Champions Club ecosystem who works for Ford (not Schott/Sydney... are they Ford or GM?) and he was worried about his division doing a bunch of layoffs so he's trying to "stay as busy as possible" to make sure he keeps his job.
While I hate that dreaded b-word, I have no gripe about it there; keep your gig young blood. But when he told me that I immediately tried to think of a time where I tried to "stay as busy as possible" in order to make it seem like I have less free time than I did. And the first thing that popped up was the embarrassing post on Open Mobility where I got roasted by Murley, Ricky, the Banet girls, Mrs. Carey, and basically the rest of the gym (much like now, Bubs was too good for mobility back then, still riding high from her AOTS two years previously - she was Mr. Malak before Mr. Malak).
The background was that I was so "busy" that instead of doing a designated mobilty session on Saturdays (Saturdays and Wednesdays were always mobility days at that time), I just scheduled them last-minute to go on while I was doing a one-on-one session. The post linked was done because the kids were talking more than I wanted, so I only invited Jason, David Sap (what was I on??) and the Kavanaugh twins to come to the next one. My rationale from the comments section:
Believe it or not, Saturday is probably the most busy day of the week for me.
No cussing in the comments, Chris!
Aside from the one-on-ones,
Anyone remember Fundamentals? That's the one-on-ones I was referring to. The solution was to just get competent enough at scaling that a new person could jump in a session and get a good dose.
this is when I get most of the cleaning, organizing, and website work done
In February 2014 we had 76 posts on the main page for that month. Murley and Emma chipped in, but I did a majority of them. From January through August of that year, 76 was also the lowest amount for a given month. That is a lot of time that would have been better off spent on making sure Emma was staying connected while away at school, or making sure Alyssa and Tyler Jabara were getting their Champions Club careers started off right, or literally a dozen other things more important and more personal than typing on a website.
- which usually gives me about an hour or two of free time towards the end of the day - a major rarity throughout the week.
That's a me problem that needed to be fixed during the week when my first session did not start until 2:30 pm, not Saturday
At the moment, I typically only have the time and energy to do them at the same time as fundamentals
Again, work backwards and set my hours so I have the energy when needed. Also, everyone has the same amount of hours in a day. Bad English from the failed English major.
for the people than have the ability to keep it down for about an hour.
Mr. Gjon would literally suffocate. Mr. Ron would spontaneously combust.
That will change during the summer
You mean when I have /checks Summer 2014 schedule 8(seriously? why for 40 people a day??) sessions through the day instead of 4?
- when there are much less one-on-ones, more people, changed days, and it will be a structured class instead of open.
Something I had the cabability to do at that time instead of waiting if I wasn't too consumed with trying to be "on the clock".
If it temporarily means less people show up, I'm cool with that.
Sounds like an a-hole thing to say, but that mindset has also helped me in other circustances. Summer 2020 being the one that comes to mind the most. I'm not embarrassed by saying this.
You guys will live for another week, learn, than maybe be back at it in two weeks.
This one I am. Learning for the wrong reason is not learning at all.
Not debatable on this one as of now.
Then why was I so intent on defending myself?
As of February 2014, there were two major things that needed to be subtracted: Fundamentals sessions and website posts; and maybe not subtracted completely, but I definitely needed to set a limit to my hours in those two areas. There is some serious talent in the picture above that did not get the attention they needed because I tried to stay busy. It's a miracle we're still operating in 2022.
