Coach's Corner: EP

I have no video, picture, or anything else up for analysis in this edition of Coach's Corner. Rather, this is an attempt to paraphrase a conversation I had with the Champions Club's 4th most annoying member: Erica Potter (known as EP).

EP came in Friday during the 6 pm session to make her monthly payment, and also to inform me that she would not be training with us again until May 15 - the day her tennis season was going to end. Here's her reasons:

1. She felt "sluggish."

2. Balancing senior year in high school, CrossFit, and Tennis was taking a toll.

3. She needed to prioritize sport over CrossFit.

4. Her tennis game was taking a hit.

5. She heard Master P was coming back.

Ok, so number 5 may have been made up, and we probably won't see him until baseball is over, but this will go down as one of the most surprising conversations I've ever had with an athlete. First off, she told me this in person - which seems to be rare now in an era where texting takes a lot of the pressure of face-to-face conversation out of the picture. Secondly, she was mature enough of an athlete to admit that she prioritized CrossFit over tennis. EP mentioned that she would save some energy during tennis practice and rush things so she could make it to CrossFit in time and still have a good workout. After a loss in a match earlier this week, she came to the realization that, being her senior year, she needs to give tennis her full-time attention for the remainder of the season. After all, that's what she started training for in the first place.

EP, I am thoroughly impressed with you. And it's been awhile since someone has "impressed" me. Keep us posted on when your big matches. We will be there. You have no choice but to kill it now!
