Coach's Corner: Timing vs. Position w/ Rashad

Movements like push press, clean, and snatch all involve a skill and cordination that their foundational moves (shoulder press, front squat, overhead squat) don't really possess. When the former come up on max effort days, we have the option to concentrate on the position of the movement (aka strength), or the timing (aka skill.)
On Monday we did 5 rep max hang power snatch, then 5 rep max clean and jerk. As far as looking at timing or position: is was a case by case thing. Rashad Hopkins is a junior OL from Mott and has only been exposed to this stuff for about a month. He was singled up with Murley at the 6:30 pm session and got to work on a little bit of both.
You'll notice he pressed out on the hang snatches. Since his position remained in tact, Murley just gave him a few cues to see if it could be fixed quickly and didn't make a big deal when it didn't. He is not used to having his arms overhead and it is probably a good thing to hit every now and then.
As for the second half of the video, Murley wanted to focus on the timing of the clean, so she took away he start (deadlift) and the finish (push/split jerk) and had him only do the hang power clean. For someone his size, having more weight on the bar helps with feedback because it increases awareness of bodyweight perception (pressure on the feet).
It should also be noted that Rashad's position was a little off on all 5 lifts. Murley addressed that separately by having him perform a tuck hold from the pull-up bar in between sets.
Be patient kids and parents. It takes time to get both up to par, and there is always some adjusting we can do. Just remember: great timing + great position = lots of weight and fast workouts.
