"Hey Chris, can I talk to you for a minute?"
"Sure thing B."
That is all it takes. Sure it's temporarily awkward, but this is the best way to deal with an upcoming inconvenience. And that is why Katie Bromm is Katie Bromm and you are not.
The Ginger Gazelle came up to me late in September to inform me that she would have to take the month of October off from CrossFit because she has been feeling sluggish due to increased milage from Cross Country (see Murley's post Rest vs. Recovery). I asked if she could manage part-time to keep fresh with the movements and mobility, to which she replied that she had her mobility tools at home and the only days she would be able to make it to the gym are her rest days - which she desperately needs.
The next day, Jack Pryde did the same thing. Only his hiatus was due to his lingering shoulder issues - which he is finaly getting checked out.
Yes, I was bummed out for a few days, but I respect that they gave me a heads up. And now a month later, I'm looking forward to Bromm coming back soon, while I've been in contact with Pryde about what his timetable looks like. Last spring, EP had a similar story.
Mariah said it best during the Summer, a gym membership means you are expected to pay every month. That should be self-explanitory. But not only that, every gym I know of demands members pay on the first of the month. We choose not to do that for various reasons, but we can't keep the honor system if people keep taking advantage of it. If you know something is going to come up where your attendance will be sparce, talk to me in advance like Bromm, Pryde, and EP. They traded me being bummed short-term for long-term respect. Now when they come back, we will be on good terms.
No name calling this time, but understand that there's a new standard in place now. Unless you come talk to me in-person before hand, I assume you are with us for that month and will be responsible for your payment.
