80's Theme Workout 2023 Recap

This Summer I have been trying to keep the concept of "identity" on my mind often, and as a result I play a constant game of mental ping pong where one side of my brain serves up a monotonous Monday forehand smash and the other side returns it with a Shark Week slice. A Gym for Athletes and CrossFit by Community is the product of a 6' (6'3 in shoes) white boy who wanted to be a pro basketball player but also listened to I'll Make a Man Out of You to get pumped up before his basketball games.

And here all of you are now: coming off a week of 4 practice workouts where the only music playing was my voice yelling about falling, going lower, and finding some reason to leave the comfort zone, Mr. Gjon walked into our gym this morning - the very same gym he was treated like a freshman on varsity - looking like this:

And so did 38 other regulars and Babies for the 13th running of our annual 80's Theme Workout. The format was adjusted again this year to make the workout flow better, and, thanks to Mr. Van's request, Bad Boy Burpees were removed from the lineup this year in exchange for Bad Boys Take Charges (candlestick rolls). Bill Laimbeer would be proud. We actually had a really close finish for first place, with David Sap and Katie Shakes taking first overall, and the teams of Koltin/Gavin and Mr. Mark and Josh Van coming within a point of each other for second and third place.

Theme Workouts are just as much a part of our gym's identity as running on the balls of our feet, deadlifting with a rigid midline, or Cecilia Steinwascher and Chase Kuiper, and the 80's Theme has been a staple for every Summer since the Fieldhouse. It's as easy or as hard as you want to make it, but, more importantly, it illustrates a very healthy relationship you all have with your health and fitness: you can be serious when you need to and then flip it off to be laid back.

Thank you guys for another great turnout today! Big ups to Shakes for the speakers and the snacks after, big ups to Bubs for the playlist, and big ups to Parker for jumping in with Mr. Carey when we had an odd number and surviving 10 rounds of verbal assault from Mr. Malak.

Next up we'll be bringing back one old Theme from a previous Summer. Not exactly sure which one we'll do, but plan on it being two weeks from now.
