Champions Club Summer 2022 Final Attendance

Summer attendance is one of the ways I artificially replicate some form of competition I miss so much from basketball, football, track, etc. So when we have a Summer like last year that breaks the attendance records across the board, my first thought is "how are we gonna beat that?" But, like I talked about in Bubs's AOTS Feature Editorial, it is important to appreciate the struggle for small gains; we are probably past the point where any Summer's attendance will be at the top of every landmark, and that's okay. The important thing is to stay within the ballpark of Summer 2021 and hope the time was right for a few select areas to come out ahead.

Whoa Nelly, did that ever happen! Check it out.

[Bubs, Madison, Makenna, and Dillon were all adjusted by 1 day because I asked them to test out a workout before/after hours and I wanted them to save a trip. Also, Erica's attendance counted for 2 during the brief time she was in this Summer. And the Babies/Double-A attendance only counted on Sundays, even though they were here during the week and often jumped in workouts.]

Our total number this Summer was 120 people: 87 regulars and 33 in the farm system (15 Babies, 18 Double-A). There were more, as usual, but I didn't include a lot of one-timers or people like Ricky, who was in for a few weekends. Crawford stays on because he committed, was consistent for a minute, then bailed. There also weren't enough Late Registration peeps to have their own list, so we included them: Raymar is the only one who came in late, and Erica, Alejandro, Sydney, and Schott were the only ones who left significantly early.

Now it is time to take this to further review, which means we are calling the Champions Club ghost, Dean (Blandino?), to help direct the conversation so I don't go off on rants about the state of Iowa and Jay-Z lyrics.

...

... Dean? What are you doing, dawg?

I'm makin short term goals when the weather folds / just put away your leathers and put ice on the gold

Dean! You're on my man! Time to bring you out!

So them rings and things you sing about, bring 'em out / it's hard to yell when the barrell's in your mouth

Since when are you a hip hop fan?

You moron, I'm literally in your imagination. You are just desperate to have a hip hop dude in the gym.

Sap is back though.

Yeah but he thinks Wayne is the GOAT.

True dat. But aren't you supposed to be charged with keeping me on topic?

Don't try to jail my thoughts and think precincts / I can't be controlled with programs and presets.

I hate you.

Reset.

...

Are you done?

So you grumpy young lad, how are you going to spin a good thing into a "we're still not there" thing this time?

Ugh, that middle class; last year we had 15(!) people in that 70% range, and this year we had 7. Last year we had 27 people in the 60's and 50's; this year we had 19. I think those are big enough differences for the effect to be felt at a session - weekday or team workout.

Do you know the culprit?

I have a confirmation bias, but I think I do. In 2021 a lot of the middle class came from the younger kids: Ashlyn, Priti, Langston, Conamora, Kadence, Perk, Jenna, Tea, Karen, Arthur, Josh Backos, Lily, Sam, Calan, William all finished in the 60's and 50's in 2021 and all saw their attendance drop below 50 this Summer except for Jenna (50 on the dot) and Ashlyn (51).

Why did that happen?

It just wasn't the right time, I think. One of the vulnerabilities about bring a gym for athletes is athletes have many places competing for their athleticism; when a basketball coach sends a text message to the Kuiper residence about yet another open gym, I doubt it is intended for our beloved Duug.

One thing I think I did well this Summer was spend time connecting with the Monkeys and the high school boys (chimps? gorillas? babboons?). We talked about a lot of non-workout things like seeing the difference between important things and urgent things, and coming to the realization that every time you say yes to one thing you're saying no to many other things. I like where they left off this Summer and a big emphasis this school year will be to try and get them to start next Summer ahead of where they left off this one.

Any other thoughts?

Dude! Did you really think these numbers would put me in a bad mood?

Yeah.

Did you see the top of the board?

No. Nobody is even reading at this point anyway. The AOTS post demonstrated that.

True.

So can we get to the Draft?

Okay but first we gotta talk about the top of the board.

Jesus had 12 disciples. Never mind, that's not the way to start this one. I had been dreaming of a day where our entire top-10 finished at 90 percent; never did I dream that our AOTS would be left out of the top-10 despite finishing at 90 percent. 12 people in the 90's is an all-time record! And the margin at 10th place and 20th place from this year to last year is also significant enough to notice a difference.

Hmm, I suppose that is a little interesting. What was that difference?

The parents played a big role; 3 parents in the 90's last year, 5 this year. I also think this is kind of where the timing was just good for a big chunk of people; I think the Summer of "Me" post was reflective of where people like the Vans, Aaron, Bubs, Zander, Mr. Malak, Wesley, Schulz, Jessica, Mr. Ron, and Mr. Curtis, and were mentally at.

The longer I'm doing this thing, the more I'm noticing that it's better not to compromise and just wait until the time is right. Summer 2022 encouraged me to keep true with that belief.

So are you happy about the attendance or mad about the attendance? Asking for a friend who's going to be at the burpee session later.

Way closer to happy than mad. Way closer. The time was right for the top of the board, and not right for the middle class or the bottom, even though they were still in the ballpark.

Speaking of timing, can we just get to the freaking draft?

Yup, let's call in our in-house draft expert Mr. Mel K(u)iper.

4th place: Body of Christ (48.2%)

Running while everyone was lunging at Madison, lunging while everyone was running at attendanceK(u)iper's postseason analysis. It should be known that there ended up being 16 draftable people that finished below 30% attendance this Summer. Half of them were picked by Zander. There's your problem, Todd.

3rd place: Grunchberries (55.7%)

Maybe Mrs. Gloria can pick for her next timeK(u)iper's postseason analysis. On paper Bubs's team looked like a no-brainer, and it continued to look that way through most of the Summer. But the top of her board did not outweight the bottom and as a result she falls to a 3rd place finish.

2nd place: Godspeed (60.4%)

Excessive celebration on the offense; Hazel Park kid; 15 yard penalty will be enforced on the Draft

K(u)iper's postseason analysis. The best pick of the entire draft belonged to Aaron when he grabbed Mr. Ron with a 16th(!!!) round pick. He found Tom Brady but could not find a way for his boys Calan, Mr. Andrew, Chase, and Josh Backos to make a few more trips out this way.

1st place: Book of Banet (62.6%)

Be not afraid, I go before you always

K(u)iper's postseason analysis. The kid who almost got pushed out of the draft due to scheduling conflicts ends up taking home the championship. I could not have scripted it better, myself.

Don't you like comparing things?

Compulsively.

How does this compare to last year? Asking for that friend again /shhuuusssshhh Bruce, keep it down

Anto would have come in 3rd last year. Bruce Almighty still holds the record.

Who did you shenghi into doing the attendance for you this time around?

Coach Casey. I originally typed it out "Chaco Casey" so maybe we'll keep that as a nickname. Either way, the fact that he was able to keep up with the attendance on top of his best Summer of fitness is really impressive and I am really grateful for that. Competition makes everything better, and having attendance numbers adds a partial level playing field to combat the areas that come down to my judgement. It was a better Summer - both in the gym and on the fringes - with Coach Casey all in.

You could almost say he provided a safety net for you.

Was that an Iowa joke?

Could be.

I'm going to need someone else to coordinate this for me.

Kinda like...

Time to go Dean!
