Champions Club Summer 2020 Final Attendance

Going into the Summer I figured that since there would be a lot more "nope, you can't come in at this different time" our overall attendance would be down a bit. I also figured that the number we started with was going to be pretty close to the number we finished with, thus the "rolling attendance" being our main attendance thing we'd keep track of.

I was wrong on both accounts.

By the numbers and by feel, this has been our best Summer of attendance in the history of the Champions Club. I was not originally planning on posting individual stuff, but it was around this point...

... when I realized that not even the grueling hour of 8 am could deter you savage gymgoers from making the trek to the Champions Club. So we're including individual stuff now. If Coach Casey was ever at the gym, you could thank him for keeping track of all the numbers. For reference, here's previous Summer's attendance:

This is actually a lot of people.

Yes, much more than I expected, especially considering the premise of this was "Invite-only." We ended up having 99 people sign up at one point or another for Summer 2020, 93 would probably be the official number I roll with. We also had more people sign up during the Summer (12) this time around than ever, and they were all great additions.

That attendance % though...

I know! That's why I posted it. Plus you have to take into account that 1) I said no to lots of people who couldn't make another session and 2) people unwillingly missed days, sometimes weeks, because they knew a friend of a friend who coughed three weeks ago and they didn't want to but decidedit was probably best to play it safe. Off the top of my head, Owen, Alyssa, Bankston, the Colussi fam, Dillon, Jessica, Ethan and Mrs. Hana, and Lulu all showed - all joking aside - good responsibility by sitting out at one point or another.

To my knowledge, we managed to do this thing for 10 weeks without a single positive coronavirus test. I have no idea how the world works. I do want to give a special shout to Mrs. Van for helping keep the gym equipment clean all Summer.

Are you going to resist comparing this to other Summers?

Of course not. Comparing things that don't really need to be compared to is what I do best. Here's the attendance-by-place:

10th place

2014 - 85% (Ricky)

2015 - 82% (Lauren Higgins)

2020 - 81% (Conamora)

Dood!

Yes, I know. In addition to taking the session invite/leave-of-absence stuff into account, this is also only counts the regulars. If I added the Late Registration people to the mix (as I did every year before 2018) then the 56th place person would have been over 50%.

Do you have any more fancystats courtesy of Coach Casey?

Yes.

2020: 48.9%.

What about rolling attendance?

So rolling attendance is a term I made up that means what % of the gym attended on a given day. Again, I planned on doing this for the entire Summer, but there were way more moving parts in and out than I thought.

Did you do any numbers for it?

Yes. Coach Casey made fun of me for trying to do it by hand, then did it in like 12 seconds on his laptop. Here's the rolling attendance for June:

Date Count Possible Percentage
8-Jun 58 66 88%
9-Jun 61 66 92%
10-Jun 57 66 86%
11-Jun 30 66 45%
12-Jun 53 66 80%
13-Jun 41 67 61%
14-Jun 46 67 69%
15-Jun 35 67 52%
16-Jun 63 69 91%
17-Jun 56 68 82%
18-Jun 56 67 84%
19-Jun 45 67 67%
20-Jun 23 67 34%
21-Jun 23 67 34%
22-Jun 60 68 88%
23-Jun 34 68 50%
24-Jun 54 68 79%
25-Jun 45 69 65%
26-Jun 45 68 66%
27-Jun 17 68 25%
28-Jun 25 68 37%
29-Jun 50 67 75%
30-Jun 51 70 73%

And what was a good number again?

According to a few well-known affiliate owners, 60% of your gym showing up on any given day is cause for celebration.

DOOD!

Yes, I am happy as well.

Is there anything you are not happy about at the moment?

You mean other than the B1G's refusal to risk their kids personal safety and begin a football season in 3 days?

Yes, other than that.

No. Honestly this is the most enjoyment I've ever had from a Champions Club Summer.

Are there any weak spots?

Yes. The Babies is the only group that was better in March than they are now. We had 10 consistent kids in there for the Summer, but 4 of the foundational pieces - Zeena, Josh, Natalie, and Michael - just graduated to the middle school session. Thankfully they're still doing sessions with the Babies crew to keep the energy up there. That session needs to be rebuilt, but I'm confident it won't take as long as it did when Jacqueline Asmar was running around in lone ranger Babies sessions in 2016. There's a few new Babies on deck as we speak.

Remember last year you said you were missing something?

Yeah. This Summer 5 of our top-10 in attendance were high schoolers. 2 were middle schoolers: Conamora finished in the top 10, and Jaylee had perfect attendance. All 7 of them are still with us for the fall. And we have Chase Kuiper and Lulu and Paris and Tea'. We are emphatically not missing the teenage crowd at the moment. Looking back at what I wrote last time:

But we were still missing that... you know. I know. It's going to be a while, though. The stacked top of the chart - especially with teenagers - is what made the gym electric during the Freaks era.  Evan would have made top 10 in 2014 by one hair on his beard. Luke would not have made it. The combination of the Freaks knowing each other so well and living so close I think made them different than the high school crew we have now. Also, none of them played travel sports. Maddison, Makenna, Sharp, and crew live about 40 minutes away and are trapped in year-round soccer.

...aside from spelling Madison's name wrong, it's clear the Champions Club was able to benefit from the lockdowns about as much as humanly/socially possible. We have The New Freaks and the Monkey Exhibit.

What does all this mean?

It means as I'm writing this I am coming to the realization that the Champions Club is in the healthiest, strongest place it's ever been.
