Thanksgiving Workout 2023 Recap

More than trying to spend time more effectively, or a bug in the upload process that isn't resizing the pictures, or some obscure principle that probably only matters to me, there is a simpler reason why I don't post pictures on our site like I used to:

... because sometimes an innocent squat and hollow rock can turn into Coach Casey moeller-deep in CT's butt while doing the roller coaster no-hands thing. This picture was probably taken moments after Mr. Robinson had some choice words about what I could do with his dangly bits after I politely, responsibly asked him to pretty please squat just a tad bit lower my kind sir.

The family environment I grew up in was about as far from raunchy as you could imagine; I've never heard my mom, dad, aunt, uncles, or grandparents swear at any holiday gatherings, there's really no drinking, and our movie of choice still comes from the Pixar archives. So when the Champions Club sessions began to blend with parents, college kids, high schoolers, middle school kids, and Babies back in 2011, I followed the format at my own family gatherings. Plus Foley didn't want the groups mixed anyway, so we were on thin ice. This is where posts like the McGonagall Quote of the Week and Dinner Table Rule came to play.

But the more parents we get in the gym and the more I talk to them (one of the great side effects of not doing times or pictures), the more I realize how... umm... different their upbringing was than mine. And they turned out just fine. Much better than fine, actually. The fringes are not to be feared, but embraced.

...........

So today for the Thanksgiving Workout we had 55 in attendance. Here's the breakdown:

  • Middle school & younger: 15
  • High school: 10
  • College-aged kids: 9
  • Parents: 21

How much more balanced could we get? How much more balanced could a family holiday party get? As much as I wanted to be a gym for kids, we have been blessed to have that idea smushed flatter than Ol' Floppy; that very concept insinuates people leaving once they hit a certain age and never coming back. 10 years ago we had a Thanksgiving Workout that featured Shannon who was Jessica's age, Bubs, who was Dylan's age, David Sap, who was Mya's age, and Crystal, who was the same age then as she is today and will always be. At the time we were a gym for kids (15 of the 24 were high schoolers). Now we are a gym for families. Or, I should say a gym for one family.

And if we're truly going to surrender to the fact that everyone in the Champions Club is family, then we know there are things we'll like about everyone and things we'll dislike; times someone will be on our good side and times when they'll be in the doghouse; actions we'll align with and actions that will confuse us. All Mr. Robinson asks is that Coach and CT include him next time.

And as an attempt to mellow things out, here's some Bob Ross for that Van Dyke Brown soul.
